Abstract-Alternative: This investigation was undertaken to study the dominant coping behaviors utilized by a seven-year-old boy to cope with the stress of hospitalization. The Subject was hospitalized for surgical corection of penoscrotal hypospadias. The descriptive method, care study technique was used to investigate the problem. The process recording was tool for data collection, Date grathered were recorded and interpreted within twenty-four hours after each interaction with the Subject. Reliability of judgment was checked by a clinical specialist in the nursing care of children. Preliminary examination of the data revealed a central theme of coping throughout the Subject's hospitalzation. The identified coping behaviors included strengthening of ego resources was devided into three sub-categories:(1)striving for independence ;(2)maintaining a link with home ; and (3)maintenance of self-esteem. Of the three majors categories of coping behavior the Subject employed strengthening behaviors, ten instances were identified as striving for independence (10:25), eight instances were identified as maintaining a link with home(8:25), and seven instances were identified as maintenance of self-esteem(7:25). The incidence of seeking information was one third of the total identified coping behaviors(18:55). Manifestations of control of other throughout the Subject's hospitalization(12:55) was about half as great as the incidence of ego strengthening behaviors. The Suject seemed to control himself well during hospitalzation. Through his effective use of the various coping behaviors throughout the entire course of the hosptialization, he was able to deal with the stresses and maintain an equilibrium within himself.
